By Mark Ewbie

This movie review covers the soon to be released blockbusting rom-com that is "Wikileaks - The Revenge of Assange". Previous working titles were "Wikileaks the Movie" and "Escape from Guantanamo".

Read on for an indepth review of the Wikileaks movie - you wont get this quality on Rotten Tomatoes.

...

A hilarious roller coaster of a film that makes you cry, think and quite literally poo yourself laughing all at the same time.

They said this was the movie that couldn’t be made but Hollywood has said to hell with the suppression of free speech, and gone out on a limb with the funniest, tear jerking, entertaining and meaningful romp of a movie since Bad Santa.

Two hundred million just on special effects, with a wardrobe to die for, and some of the sharpest gags from writers of shows like the Simpsons and South Park.

The special edition of the DVD features interviews with Assange supporters such as Fox News and the Burmese Comedy Trio – and an hour long speech from Obama describing his joy that his dream of a free world has finally been realised (I passed on that).

Featuring

  • Justin Bieber as the young Assange
  • Ben Stiller as Julian Assange
  • Jennifer Aniston as love interest Sarah Palin
  • Danny de Vito as the wisecracking lawyer
  • Tom Hanks as the sadistic torturer who flushes Julians copy of the Hackers Bible in a heart rending scene

Plus a welcome return to the screen for Joan Rivers, who plays Jennifer's body double in the Palin and Assange romantic scenes.

Plotline

The story will be familiar of course to anyone who watches the news, but in this Tarantino movie the whole deal is given a much needed twist of laughter. A comedy romp, action, thrills, plus some gratuitous but always welcome Alaskan sex scenes – the movie never flags.

We join the young Assange at boarding school where he is tortured by the older boys. This is cleverly cut with the scenes at Guantanamo – and Tarantino brilliantly edits the wet towel from the water boarding to prep school showers with one simple flick.

Later Julian and his merry bunch of hactivists form a sinister, yet funny, group dedicated to bringing down the civilised world. We watch them as they type incomprehensible gobble de gook into computers and thrill as the Satanic duo of Google and Walmart are brought to their knees by having to accept cash only transactions.

But powerful forces are stirring. Julian’s mum is not happy with the company he keeps so she asks the Washington State Department for help. A crap (crack?) team of assassins are despatched and hilarity ensues as this modern version of the Keystone Cops attempts to locate and destroy Julian’s Nintendo DS.

A sad bit in the film is when Julian hands himself in to the security forces, believing he is going to pay a parking fine. He is in the system, and the audience holds its breath (much like Julian in the bucket of water scene) while we hope and pray our hero survives.

From Sweden to Guantanamo, with beautiful camera work showing the Cuban shoreline at its finest, we move towards the seemingly inevitable conclusion.

A visitor comes to see Julian. Jennifer Aniston, at her finest here playing Sarah Palin, has come to shoot him herself as part of her TV reality series. But one look at the blond hair, the piercing eyes, the woman’s hands – and she is smitten. How could she shoot this Bambi of a man?

Can she equate her love for Julian with her desire to run America? Jennifer and Tarantino perfectly describe the inner turmoil she suffers by playing a montage of Sarah’s finest moments, mostly from funny You Tube clips.

I won’t spoil the ending – but the UK Royal Wedding has got nothing on the bash that the movie serves up at the end. And the songs! Fabulous.

The extra outtakes, especially the water boarding where the towel falls off, are pee your pants hilarious.

Reviews

  • Polanski – I was shaking with laughter
  • Madoff – This film will make a lot of money
  • Obama – This is an uplifting story of how good can triumph over evil. We have many episodes in our own lives (ed: rest of this cut short – it runs to fifteen pages)
  • Putin – Best picture since Brokeback Mountain

Awards

The movie has already collected several awards including the coveted Oscar for "best use of a wet towel".

Here are some others.

  • Nobel Peace Prize
  • Congressional Honour award
  • Chinese stick it up the Yanks award
  • Russian stick it up the Yanks award
  • Ebay stick it up Amazon award

Assange: Wikileaks
Amazon Price: $3.99

Recommendation

I give this film five stars. Up there with classics like Gone with the Wind and Finding Nemo – this will entertain the whole family.

If you are watching with your kids (and they will love it especially the edgy political satire when Obama’s trousers fall down) then remember to skip the scene where Sarah starts to get the hotties. Other than that it is perfectly suitable for everyone.

The film is available in multiplexes, prisons and Algerian rendition centres right now. Enjoy!!

Voted up. I am still smiling. You have completely captured the essence of the film and distilled it to its finest moments. There are at least 10 people who will go to this movie because of your fine review, maybe 11 if you count my Great Uncle Benny. Of course, he attends Tupperware parties to cruise for potential dates, but that doesn't matter. Assange owes you a debt of gratitude and he will be remiss if he doesn't mention you in his next awards acceptance speech.

Thanks Karen - I hope Assange will make it to the next acceptance speech. And Great Uncle Benny as well of course. Let's all go - we can start a movement.

Thanks Denise, glad you liked it. I tried not to spoil the ending. Just hope no one else does....

I can't believe you used the words "bambi of a man" without completely demolishing my views on Assange's sexuality.

Well, not sure what your views are, but I wanted to convey a gentleness, an innocence and a naive unawareness of the awful mess he is in.

My views are... varied. On one hand I think that he was brave to do what he did, and a lot of the information should have been available publicly.

On the other hand I remember the line by K in MIB:

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

Some things people really aren't un-brainwashed enough to fully appreciate. And that's based on the fact that I consider 95% of people brainwashed by a combination of TV, fake conspiracy theories, government and just not-wanting-to-know.
